Jayawijaya mountains stretching lengthwise in the center of the province of West Papua and Papua (Indonesia) to Papua New Guinea Island Newguinea. Mountains that have multiple rows of the highest peak in Indonesia is formed by removal of the sea floor thousands of years ago. .

According to geological theory, the beginning of the world only have a continent named Pagea at 250 million years ago. Continent Pangea broke up into two to form the continent of Laurasia and the Eurasian continent. Eurasian continent to continent Gonwana broke out again in the future will be the mainland of South America, Africa, India, and Australia.

Very intensive precipitation occurred on the continent of Australia, plus a plate collision between the Indo-Pacific plate with the Indo-Australia on the seabed. Plate collision resulted in the island arc, which also became the forerunner of the islands and mountains in Papua. Due to the continuous removal, sedimentation and tectonic events along the sea, within a period of millions of years to produce the high mountains as can be seen today. Evidence that the high mountains along the New Guinea was part of the seabed can be seen from the fossil remains in rocks Jayawijaya. Although located at an altitude of 4800 masl, fossilized sea shells, for example, can be seen on the limestone and clastic rocks contained in Jayawijaya Mountains. Therefore, besides being a paradise of the climbers, Jayawijaya Mountains is also a paradise world geological researchers.

Besides being known as Puncak Jaya, the highest peak is also known as Carstenz Pyramide, or the Carstensz Peak. name was taken from a traveler from the Netherlands, namely January Carstensz, who first saw the snowy peaks in the tropics, sepatnya in New Guinea. Because, for Europeans, found in tropical soils the snowy mountains is something that is almost impossible.

Carstensz report the truth was revealed after nearly three hundred years later, when in 1899 a Dutch expedition to New Guinea map and find the snow-capped mountain peaks, as reported by Crastensz. To honor the Carstensz, the mountaintop is then given the name as the name implies.
